Introduction

In this chapter, students will learn about the modern political history of Nepal, starting from the historical incidents of 1825 B.S. (1768 A.D.). The various learning materials within the chapters will help students learn and further explore the history of Nepal.Nepali political history is divided into three parts: the ancient, medieval, and modern periods. During the ancient period from the 7th to the 8th centuries B.C., Kirat rulers ruled parts of Nepal. They were considered the first known rulers of Nepal. During the medieval period, Nepal remained largely undisturbed. The Mallas ruled Nepal and stayed largely confined within their own territories. The modern history of Nepal follows, starting from the time of the Baise and Chaubise Rajyas (states). During this period, there were smaller sets of kingdoms, the Baise and Chaubise Rajyas, existing within the current Nepali territory. In this module, students will learn about the modern history of Nepal, beginning with the time when king Prithvi Narayan Shah started his conquest and unification campaign of Nepal.
